When it comes to planning a funeral, you may want to learn and understand the terms and processes you are committing to and paying your money for. When you hire a funeral director, they may use some terms that could be unfamiliar to you, hence you need to learn the most common funeral terms below.
- Arrangement conferences
This is the very first meeting you make with the funeral director for preplanning your funeral or planning for a deceased loved one.
- Ashes
These are also termed as cremated remains, they are pulverized boat pieces that stay after the body is cremated and seems like a grey powder that looks a lot like sand.
- Burial
This refers to the internment of the deceased body in the ground or at sea. This can be implemented in a nature friendly manner.
- Cash Advances
This is the money the funeral homes may have to pay to other parties in advance on your behalf. This cost is not included in the price list of the funeral home.
- Casketing
This refers to placing and securing the deceased in a casket or a container.
- Cremation
This refers to placing the deceased’s remains into a casket or any other container. The body and container are then burned at a crematory and reduced to bone and ashes.
- Crypt

- Direct Cremation
This is a type of cremation that happens with no funeral service, memorial or celebration. This is the cheapest form of disposition.
- Disposition
This refers to the burial, entombment, cremation or donation of the human remains.
- Donation
Here the body can be donated in the form of disposition or choose to donate certain organs, tissues and/or bones.
- Embalming
Here the body is temporarily preserved via the injection of chemicals.
- Entombment
This means placing the casketed body into a crypt.
- Eulogy
This is a speech for praising or celebrating the deceased.
- Family Car
This is the vehicle that carries the family of the dead to the place of disposition or service.
- Flower Car
This is the vehicle that carries flowers to the place of disposition or service.
- Funeral Insurance
This insurance policy pays the costs related to the preplanned funeral.
- Funeral Service
This ceremony takes place in a funeral home or at a place where the body is present.
