Dengue Fever is a mosquito-borne illness that is most likely to affect people who live in tropical or subtropical climates. Most people are able to recover from Dengue fever within a few weeks without any lasting complications. However, a small percentage of people will develop life-threatening complications.
Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever
This is a more severe form of Dengue Fever. It can cause a person to go into shock. Patches of blood under the skin, rash, severe headaches and vomiting are some of the signs of Dengue hemorrhagic fever. Dengue hemorrhagic fever can be treated with a blood transfusion. A person may receive platelets in addition to whole blood.
People who have low oxygen may be treated with oxygen therapy. Additionally, people can be treated with intravenous fluids. If this condition is not treated, then it can have a mortality rate of 40 percent. The chance of mortality goes down to 1 to 2 percent if this condition is treated early. Proper treatment can prevent this condition from progressing.
Myalgia
Myalgia is severe muscle pain. It is also common for people to have severe pain in the joints and a high fever. If you suffer from myalgia, then this is a sign that your dengue fever has progressed to a serious state. There are pain medications that can be used in order to manage pain. You can also receive physical therapy.
Fluid Accumulation in the Liver
Dengue fever can cause fluid to accumulate in your liver. This condition can cause the liver to swell. If the liver swelling is not treated, then it can lead to liver failure. Liver failure requires urgent medical care. In some cases, doctors are able to treat the liver damage itself. The treatment can help the liver heal itself. However, if the damage cannot be reversed, then a person may need to get a liver transplant.
The surgeon will remove the damaged portion of the liver and replace it with a healthy liver.
Who is at Risk for Developing Complications?
Anyone can develop complications from Dengue Fever. However, there are some people who are at a much greater risk of developing complications than others. If you are a female, then you are more likely to develop complications. Children who are under the age of 12 are also more likely to develop complications. Additionally, this condition is most likely to have an adverse effect on someone who already has a weak immune system. v The best thing that you can do to protect your health is to hire a professional mosquito control service.
